Fringe Ingredient Decoder helps people understand product ingredient lists quickly. The app does not require an account.
Information used by the app
- Camera access is used only to scan barcodes when you choose to use the scanner.
- Ingredient text that you paste or type is processed on-device to classify ingredients.
- The app includes a bundled local ingredient reference built from Open Food Facts, Open Beauty Facts, and FDA inactive-ingredient data so many lookups work without a backend.
- When an ingredient does not match the local reference clearly, the app may make a lightweight ingredient-name lookup against Open Food Facts or Open Beauty Facts to improve the local match.
- Recent scans and manual ingredient entries are stored locally on your device so you can reopen them later.
- Improved ingredient matches are cached locally on your device so repeated scans can open faster.
- Barcode lookups send the barcode value to Open Food Facts to fetch product information.
Data collection
We do not create accounts, do not sell personal information, and do not operate a backend service for this app.
Data sharing
When you scan a barcode, the app queries Open Food Facts to retrieve product label data. When needed, the app may also query Open Food Facts or Open Beauty Facts for ingredient-name suggestions. No local recent history or ingredient cache is synced off-device by the app.
Data sources
The app uses public ingredient and product data from Open Food Facts, Open Beauty Facts, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration inactive ingredients database.
Your choices
- You can deny camera access and still use the manual ingredient input flow.
- You can delete the app to remove local recent-history data stored on the device.
